Hi all,

I was always interested in the fate of the Direwolves and if we look at a brief summary then we can see which are potentially yet to play a part......

Rob - Grey Wind - killed at the Red Wedding

Jon - Ghost - alive at The Wall with Jon

Arya - Nymeria - alive and driven away by Arya in the forests close to King's Landing

Sansa - Lady - killed by Eddard Stark

Bran - Summer - north of The Wall with Bran, Jojen and Meera

Rickon - ShaggyDog - alive and travelling with Rickon and Osha on an island of cannibals?

Are these Direwolves yet to play an important role in ASOIAF or do you think they're just becoming small additions to the main characters?

Will Nymeria eventually meet up with Arya? Or is the huge Wolf Pack frequently mentioned being controlled by Nymeria and does she have some other part to play?

Is ShaggyDog still wild or has Rickon grown to be able to control him more?

Any ideas or crackpot theories welcome!

I think they give great vision in the development of the Stark children.
For example:
Sansa was ladylike even before going south, but she was still a part of the North. When traveling South her connection to the north was cut off.It is my believe that Sansa will never see Winterfell again, but that she will remain south, and become an important southern lady.

I believe they are a huge part of the story and the lives of the Stark children.

As Tywin said Nymeria is Arya's connection to who she is, one that will never go away as long as they both live. She can not be "no-one" as long as Nymeria exists. I also believe they will meet again and may the Gods help us all when they do!! Nymeria certainly controls the wolfpack, she found Cat, Arya always senses and see the pack around her when she dreams of Nymeria.

it was my understanding that Shaggydog was wild because Rickon was wild. Not that he couldn't control him, it was himself he could not control, not surprising for a 4 year old! Is he more in control of himself? Probably, maybe, we shall see.

If he's been living with a Wildling woman on an island of cannibles, I wouldn't bet on him bieng any more civilized at this point.

He is probably riding around on shaggydog and is the king of Skagos.

Rickon +timeskip would have been awesome.
Too bad GRRM decided against it.

I was always curious about Lady's death as a symbol of Sansa not having a pack. All of the other Stark kids have a pack of sorts, though Arya's pack changed from Gendry to the Hound to TFM.

Sansa was quite alone at KL, but now she is at least with Littlefinger and Robert, but I am sure Littlefinger is just using her, so maybe he doesn't count as a pack. The again Sansa had Dontos and Marg somewhat at KL, so maybe I have no idea what I am talking about and it has more to do with symbolizing the North connection like you all mention.

Sansa is still very very much alone. The closest thing she ever had to a true ally was Dontos, who was of course nothing but a pawn of Littlefinger. Even where she is now, by hiding her identity he's stripped her power, and she's completely beholden to him. I'm sure that will shift at some point, but truly she remains a lone wolf.

Arya....I can't really say that she has a pack either. She doesn't forge alliances as much as she does move from one group to another, depending on the needs of the circumstances. Seems to me that both the Stark girls are lone wolves. I'm still not a Sansa fan, but I long to see her reunited with Arya now that she's older and wiser. I think the two of them together would make a very, very formidable force.

Sansa has had two allies that have actually cared about her and looked out for her: Sandor Clegane and Tyrion Lannister.

They both were immensely powerful in their own ways and could have helped her, but she turned away from both of them.

I thought about Tyrion when I posted that, but then Tyrion was also looking out for himself and his house, so I don't know that he was entirely an ally. But still, I'll concede that one. As for Sandor....dunno.

Tyrion dumped the contents of the cup that poisoned Joffrey, to protect Sansa, did he not?:)

I think Arya and Nymeria are going to do scouting and spying for the ant-Lannister faction. Arya as a wolf pack leader with Nymeria would be a deadly unit, and could be focussed. The inside scouts would be warged cats.

If I were Bran, (quite a stretch), I would send Summer and Meera to help Sansa.

Shaggydog being the largest and most aggressive of the direwolves, I'd always figured that Rickon would restore his house and be the Stark in Winterfell. Maybe even King in the North. But no timeskip so.....

First post btw.

Shaggydog ( cool name by the way ) might be the biggest wolf right now but I think that was Ghost. In the first book it said Ghost was bigger than Nymeria. People think is was the runt of the litter because it was said on the HBO series not the books. Plus Rickon is just way to young to know how to control his wolf with Warg. Plus the wolves seen to sense when things are going on and want to protect their pack.

All the direwolves went to the right Stark kid. Summer with Bran make perfect match. Arya got a warrior wolf with Nymeria that now has huge wolf pack. Jon and Ghost go together.
