(Found... Almost Certainly) Can you help me identify a story from the 50's?

In the early 1950's I saved my allowance for three weeks to buy a 25 cent Sci Fi magazine at the newsstand (instead of buying a 10 cent comic book every week) because I liked what I read every week standing at the rack.

That magazine contained a story about an astronaut stranded on an asteroid. He had a ray gun that could be charged by the sun. The gun shot a green ray. There were animals to eat that he killed with the gun, but he could see the earth in the sky and dreamed of leaving his sere asteroid and returning to his green homeland. One day a ship arrived. The pilot was surprised to see him but could take him home. The pilot said humans had abandoned the earth for the moon because earth had become uninhabitable (nuclear, I think -- this was the 1950's). The stranded man shot the pilot and continued his life as before, dreaming of earth.

I want very much to find the story. I was sure it must be The Green Hills of Earth, since that title is a great match for the story I remember, but I found and read that one and it is not the one I am looking for.

Can anyone help me? I gave the magazine to a high school friend who had complete runs of most of the Sci Fi magazines, and lacked just that issue.

Hi, Judy, and welcome to the Chrons!

I don't recognise this story myself, so I'm moving it to "Book Search", our dedicated thread for such queries, where someone may be able to help you.

Don't worry there's a lot of us stop by here who enjoy a good challenge. Sadly on this occasion I can't help. Sorry.

This is most likely Frederic Brown’s “Something Green” (1951). It matches the time frame, the misremembered title (see below), and ending.

Synopsis: An Earthman, shipwrecked on the planet Kruger III where the range of colours includes mainly browns, reds, pinks and purples, longs desperately for the green hills of Earth and searches for a way to escape. One day, a spaceship lands and its pilot eventually finds him…
