Current Adventure Fantasy?

Hello, I don't read any current fantasy at all, but it looks like epic fantasy is very popular right now. Are there any authors writing stories like Conan or Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser at the moment, or has that really gone out of fashion?

I admit total ignorance of current fantasy trends, so feel free to correct me but it looks like for a lot of publishers fantasy=epic.

If there are any decent recommends of current authors writing that adventure crawl style that would be welcomed. Cheers

I'll recommend some modern fantasy, not sure if they'd all be classed as epic though...A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy, Peter V Brett has a promising start with The Painted Man and The Desert Spear, Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn is good, I have his others in my collection but have not yet read them, ummm Patrick Rothfuss is different starting with The Name of the Wind...I'm sure others will be along soon to correct me/add to the list...

I'm reading Scott Lynch's "The Lies of Locke Lamora" which is more like some of the Fafhrd than anything I've read so far - a bunch of rogues in a fantasy city, using every theatrical method they can dream up to rob the rich.

OH man! I love that book, can't believe I forgot eek! I was trying to tell everyone how awesome it was for ages after I read it...I blame Moby Dick for killing my brain...

Might be worth taking a look at George R Saunders. I've not read any of his novels yet but I have read one of his short stories and had him recommended to me here on the chrons. His style is very reminiscent of Robert E Howard's Conan. He is an African American and he has two series set in a fantasy Africa. One with a male warrior hero and one with a female warrior heroine. The short story I read featured the latter and it really did have an REH feel to it.

Couldn't recommend this more. Read all 3 while overseas a few years back. Couldn't put them down.

I like the Violette Malan books about Duhlyn and Parno. The series harkens back to Leiber with the two main characters, Man and Woman, as members of the mercenary brotherhood. Good characterization, average to good plot lines.

Thanks people, I will check these out. No Locke Lamorra in the local library, I probably have to request them. Haven't had a chance to look up all the later authors in this thread, hopefully some will be available.

They did have Wise Man's Fear by Rothfuss so I've got that now and will read it.

It is massive.

I've never heard of Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy. I'll have to go look them up! This is a great thread for recommendations.

Goodness, I hope you've read Name of the Wind then because Wise Man's Fear is book #2!
