If one is thrown onto one's own resources, a good way to spot at least some of one's previously unnoticed errors is to read the book out loud.

This can also be a good way of noticing when the text doesn't flow very well. If an author is stumbling over something they've written, there's a decent chance that at least some readers will as well. No author wants one of those readers stumbling over their prose to be someone working for a publisher or agent....
