Person of Interest

Okay, I can answer that myself since it is on right now, Channel 5, Tuesdays at 9:00 pm.

I've just watched some of it. It isn't my cup of tea really, and it isn't very sci-fi. Described as a crime thriller hi-tech drama. I know JJ Abrams is involved but how is it science fiction?

The computer system Finch built is the technothriller/sf angle - the idea that Finch and Reese are setting about stopping crimes before/during their occurrence rather than after. And, not spoiling anything for the future I don't think, as I'm being very general, but in the US, we're in season 2 and it seems "The Machine" is being brought more to the foreground though it hasn't been consistent over the two/three episodes so it's hard to say. Plus, as you say, it has Abrams and he's known for making shows weirder as they go on (to the point of destruction, usually, unfortunately).

But, no, I've been watching it mostly as Yet Another CBS Cop Show (which I usually avoid) but with a twist and on a higher quality-level than usual. The SF parts are gravy for me.

As far as the forum, I don't know what the standards are or how high the level of interest for Person of Interest is, but if you build it, I'll probably be there. :)

Me too. (Two words which should never appear by themselves in a forum. Sorry.)

Sorry for being thick, but I see now, it is a kind of 'Minority Report' machine that they have.

We can bend any rules. I respect the good judgement of the members who seem to be watching this and you obviously want to be discussing individual episodes, which is easier within a dedicated forum. Secondly, this series seems to have some legs - at least it isn't by Joss Whedon or on the Fox channel - and so the forum will grow.

I also see it as part of a trend in which science fiction has become more mainstream. The science fiction is just an element within the mainstream story.

Edit: new forum added. You can add Season One threads yourselves.

Here's another article on the show: Person of Interest and the Apocalypse of Five Minutes Ago.

If you're not on the US schedule, be careful, though - the bulk of the article vaguely references some things you may not have seen but doesn't spoil anything but the paragraph beginning "The erosion of safety with the expansion of 'defenses'" (8 of 13) starts to transition into spoilers and, if you don't want that, you'll likely want to avoid it and you'll definitely want to avoid the next "To this end" paragraph and everything after it. (I love how the paragraph after that is labelled "spoiler".)

Dave, it would have been fine without the first season episodes as the people are catching up to them. But I appreciate that you went out and did it, so thank you.

I'm catching up from the start really fast and totally hooked! Too busy to post under each episode... :)
