Looking for the name (and author) of a 1960's sci-fi book for my dad...
The story centred on a man who was gifted a device that allowed him to see the future. He was warned never to look at what the circumstances of his own death would be. Needless to say, he did exactly that and discovered that he would die on a train, and he would be looking at a wrist-watch and the time would be 7.35 pm (we think). He decides never to wear a wrist watch and never to travel by train.
Then as the story progresses he is awarded a wrist watch (which is powered by his heart), which he cannot remove. And at some point, whilst trying to escape / evade somebody, he finds himself travelling by train. He looks at his watch and the time is 7.35pm. Several mins pass and he is still alive, but when he looks at his watch the time is still 7.35pm. His panic and elevated heart rate has caused the watch to stop functioning.
But we don't know how the story ends, as when my dad read this book (many years ago), someone had ripped out the last few pages of the book. He would now quite like to find the book and find out what happened... after all these years!
Does anyone know what this book is called? Who wrote it?
Many thanks for any help!
Iain
