Vague Recollection But I Some Specificis...(help)...

1. This story took place in a distant land or universe.
2. Humans or humanoids, but no other creatures of interest.
3. Some humans had one and only one of a select psionic/mind power: Telepathy/Communication, Attack, Defense, Healing...maybe one or two additional categories.
4. The protagonist had multiple psionic powers.
5. These powers were possessed at varying degrees of power for each person.
6. A non-unique piece of headgear (might) enhance, increase or even "grant" (sometimes kill) the respective psionic gift within the wearer.
7. I believe the psionic power for the people that possess one of these powers occurs naturally and randomly (with the exception of the few that the headpiece may bring the power to bear...although I can't be 100% of this whole headpiece thing).

I do not recall any of the storyline except to say there was a large battle (gee thanks).

Ok, I actually found it after scouring the internet for over two hours.

As I referenced the series and compared my pathetic summary above that I was attempting to recall "major" aspects of the story line, I am not surprised to find there were no suggestions. I don't think my bullet "hints" could have done more damage and been more contrary from the actual storyline.

The series is called The Saga of Pliocene Exile by Julian May.

Had you said "set in the past when some people go back in time" or similar and I'd have had it right off.
