Dark, Boy, Black dog/alien, speed helmet, spaceship, cairns

A book I read in highschool and never remembered the name of. something about a boy who is stalked by a big black dog which I think was an alien, he had to use a helmet to run quickly at night where there is a spaceship or something- maybe under a cairn? Can't quite remember..
