George not blogging....

I sincerely hope so... when Patrick Rothfuss didn't blog for ages, there was a lot of concern from fans, and it turned out it was due to his father's serious illness, so I hope GRRM is just 'in the zone' and writing like mad!
 
He has been blogging a bit. About american football (I'm English – it means nothing to me) and about the US elections. He's only handed over to his assistants for a week or so.

Still, lets hope he's working on TWOW! Having followed his blog for months, I've been alarmed by all the distractions he's contending with – award ceremonies, conventions, LA business meetings, anthologies, the world and map books … …

It makes me angry when people criticise his work habits, or say he's lazy. I have huge respect for what he achieves. I just wish he could focus more exclusively on the ice and fire series and save more of the rest for later.

Series three is back on TV in March, so maybe he's getting his skates on with the books otherwise the TV show's going to come to a standstill......

aSoS will be two seasons. aFFC and aDWD will be at least one season each. With that in mind, the time that they'll need new material for the show wouldn't be earlier than MAYBE the spring of 2017, which means that if GRRM is alive and still writing that would give him 6 years to complete tWoW. I think even the most pessimistic fans would feel fairly confident he could meet that deadline, particularly given that the story will get easier to write as he gets more done (assuming he kills off as many characters as I think he will)
 
He did say somewhere that once all the conventions and other commitments were over he planned to lock himself away and write like a madman. So hopefully everything is going to plan!

I'm not sure he's got quite that much time, the way I see it he's probably ok if he gets TWOW in 2014 but any later and he could be in trouble.

ASOS will be two seasons, but one is already done. The second will be filmed next year and broadcast in 2014. I think AFFC/ADWD together will be two seasons at most, in pages and words it is huge but there aren't so many big events as A Storm of Swords, a lot of things will be cut or shortened.

So:
2013 ASOS 1
2014 ASOS 2
2015 Feast/Dance 1
2016 Feast/Dance 2
But that is broadcast date, not the first step of writing which obviously needs the material. So in 2015/16 they will need to be writing from TWOW. I'm assuming a lot of stuff is about to go down in Winds of Winter, similar to Storm of Swords, and assuming it's going to be of a length with Storm and Dance. So let's say that means two seasons for The Winds of Winter.
2017 TWOW 1
2018 TWOW 2
Which means in 2018 they'll need to be writing from A Dream of Spring. For ADOS to be out in or before 2019 when it would hit the screens GRRM is presumably going to need a few years writing time. I'd say four years per book is the best we can realistically hope for. And just to finish this piece of total speculation, the show by my logic would end in 2020, to make a show like this for 10 years would be something, and it'll be a bit strange having things like Arya in her twenties etc.

I'm sure there's some kind of plan in place for the event that the tv show catches up with the books and is at a dead end. Who knows what that is, the most likely options would seem to be the show starting to make up their own story, or GRRM giving them as yet unpublished plot. Both unappealing prospects. Or perhaps there could be a delay in production or broadcast, that wouldn't be appealing to HBO, but especially if the books are close to publication it could happen.

I seem to recall an interview with the producers in the early days of the show where this question was asked, and they said they were probably only going to follow the books closely for the first 3 or 4 seasons, after which they expected the TV series to begin to diverge significantly.
 
That would be sad if they did diverge away from the story. I do worry that this might be the case, because they have avoided making any mention of the clues and hints that forebode Jon's true heritage. I know they have to handle things differently on screen to in the book in that regards because it's harder not to spoil things, but something just gives me the impression they are completely avoiding the topic after briefly mentioning it in the first couple episodes.

But I also remember hearing that the producers - but only the producers - know the ending. Which I believe is in the event that GRRM is unable to finish writing the books. It could also be used in the event that the show catches up to the books, but then the show would be spoiling it for the readers.

They will definitely combine the AFFC and ADWD seasons together, but it might very well end up being 3-4 seasons, not just two. So they might not get to TWOW until 2018/19. But that's complete speculation.
 
Wondering if the weather has any impact on George's writing? If it's bad does he write more because he's stuck in the house? Winter is here! :)
 
Assuming he's in Santa Fe....

I don't know if there's snow on the ground there or not, but at 03:00 Santa Fe time, it was -2°C and today should be sunny (reaching a maximum of 7°C). There's no (new) snow forecast for the next week or two.





(Perhaps I should have put this in the You know you're obsessed when..... thread. :eek:)
 
GRRM has given the TV producers an outline of the rest of the story. If they overtake him, they will use that and consult with him more closely about what happens.

The TV show is not pausing for several years to let him get ahead again. That is absolutely not going to happen.

Football has a bigger impact, and both of GRRM's teams (who happen to be my teams as well) never even made the playoffs.

It's been mentioned a few times in interviews, and GRRM has said it a few times at conventions and things as well (whilst also saying that he has a big start and they won't be able to catch up etc).
 
GRRM not blogging for a couple of days is really not him going quiet. Wait for him to go silent for several months in a row (like during the darkest days of not making much progress on ADWD). Then we can worry :)
 
So when he's making less progress on the book he's not blogging either? That's kinda weird.
