Now I know many of you have Kindles which rather locks you into Amazon. Okay some other sites are selling in Kindle compatible format as well now but still, if you are not prepared or can't be bothered to convert your eBook formats then you are pretty much restricted to Amazon.
For the rest: when I first stared buying eBooks Amazon was way ahead of the other sellers in pricing. Occasionally I found books at lower prices elsewhere but not often. That situation seems to be changing now. I have noticed recently that Books On Board, who I originally did not rate very highly, now typically have base prices as low as or lower than Amazon and are constanly emailing promo codes that give generous additional discounts. Some quick examples:
Neal Asher The Gabble: Amazon £5.03 BoB £4.41 BoB promo £3.88
Toby Frost Space Captain Smith: Amazon £4.38 BoB £2.56 BoB promo £2.25
Now, sure, it doesn't always work out that way:
Peter Hamilton Evolutionary Void: Amazon £3.99 BoB promo £5.31
But it's is nice to see that the other booksellers are starting to give Amazon a run for their money.
Edit: another thing I like about Books on Board is that they tell you which books have their prices locked by the publisher. These books cannot be further discounted using their promo codes and are almost invariably the same price as Amazon (presumably they are both subject to the same price lock).
