First post, and a post out of desperation, at that. I've been looking for this story for a while; I read it in a children's or young adult anthology in the late '90s/early 2000s. The gist of it was that there's been some sort of alien invasion, and a large number of humans have been wiped out. The aliens can sense metal, so people, for instance, with braces or fillings find it almost impossible to escape. I believe -- but this part of my memory is especially unclear -- that the protagonists believed that the aliens were weak against water, and if they got to a lake they would be safe. I think they were wandering around in a forest. Unfortunately, they were wrong, and the story ended unhappily.
It wasn't Stephen Gould's Bugs in the Arroyo.
Thanks for any help anyone can give!!
