I remember enjoying Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol and Animal Man stories in the 1990's.

Yesterday I ran a search on a comic app and was surprised to see he's been doing runs writing Batman and Superman.

Question is, was this a sign of him being allowed to express his intelligent creativity in more mainstream markets ?

Or, is it the case that Morrison has dumbed down his writing for mainstream audiences?

Of his fiction, I've only read The Invisibles (which is brilliant). I've also read his sort-of-autobiography Supergods, which I think probably contains the answer to your question, but I can't remember. Anyway, it's a cracking read, even for someone (like me) not remotely interested in superheroes, and the point of this post is really just to suggest you read it.:)

I've never been a fan of Morrison, but that's just me.

He did a run on the X-Men many years ago, that was highly acclaimed (and unfinished - he left Marvel under a cloud). The critics loved it (generally because it was Morrison not because of the X-Men), and although I concede it was an epic run, it was not the X-Men. Grant did not get the X-Men, missed the point entirely and would have been better suited to an original title.

So I never read the Batman material or Superman, but critically they have been very highly acclaimed, and from what I have read of the story lines, he has bent slight to accommodate the more traditional elements of superheroics, but has still managed to infuse them with his own style.

Turning the Batman into a corporation was definitely a unique and successful element.

The biggest stir Morrison caused was his Death of Batman arc, that ironically ran at same the same time as Marvel 'killed' Captain America, the resolution of which was similar - both heroes lost in time trying to make their way home.

To all extents and purposes Batman was done on a more epic scale, with a bigger outcome. Probably well worth a read for a Batman or Morrison fan!

Well, he's been writing Batman stories since the late 80's, so.....

The best thing he has done in years imo is All Star Superman. Dumb down his writing....what, genre doesnt matter. Good superhero is always better than weak silly indy stuff.
