The Star Wars cinematic galaxy is about to experience a Big Bang. Lucasfilm is officially announcing new spinoff films that will expand the mythos and depths of the Star Wars universe in previously unexplored ways.

One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.

In a call to investors, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed while the original focus was on the highly-anticipated sequel trilogy, the idea of spinoff films was bandied about early and the additional films are now becoming a reality. "We are in development of a few standalone films," he said, "that are not part of the Star Wars saga...there are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films."

Stay tuned to StarWars.com as more exciting developments unfold.

One of them is a Yoda story. That's kind of an obvious choice, too. Very marketable. I guess Sam Jackson and Ewan McG has interest in reviving their characters, I just don't know what era it will take place in....one movie covering his 950 year life would be cool.
Mr. Lucas also had an interest in doing a Jabba the Huttman....er, Hutt story:D. As much as I would like to see that, I don't see Disney liking that because of the lack of marketability. Jabba would be a fantastic character to be in the live action TV show, though. But, if someone doesn't make a Tales from Jabba's Palace film, I will!

I'm sceptical but interested. It's a good idea to move away from the Skywalker clan.

Perhaps Darth Maul and his apprenticeship would be of interest and would certainly have action.

A Yoda movie would be interesting, for sure, though I can't see how they could cover his entire 950 years, Huttman. That's a pretty big scope to find an interesting story, though.

Surely an obvious candidate would be Boba Fett as well, as such a fan favourite. Though the prequels did go some way towards damaging the mystery behind him - I think it would have been much better to keep his origins murky.

The X-wing books would make for some good films. Been a while since I read them but from memory there were a couple of stand alones, and while they'd feature some characters we're already familiar with, such as Wedge, the roles would have been small enough in the original films that recasting them wouldn't be as jarring as having someone else play Luke or Han or Leia.

Well, they are making the first movie about our little green friend, but there are zero details. A two hour movie covering that much time would be difficult if not expensive for so many other worldly locals to create, but Lawernce Kasden of Empire Strikes Back is penning it so it should be good.

We would need a translator.

So some new news is that there will be a Han Solo spin-off and a Boba Fett spin-off. That really does not make sense to me as these two characters should have a history together, shouldn't they? I'm not complaining as that is just that much more Star Wars. Here's the link:

Either way, Jabba is sure to show up and maybe our favorite Dark Lord of the Sith? I hope they cast young Han Solo well.

It certainly would. There is an entire made up universe here to choose from and with a good writer the possibilities are endless.

By the way Rodders, I've always admired your text T.I.E. Fighters. Here's a few more:

Here's my TIE's: l-@-l {<@>} l-@-l

Ok, I cheated a little with the bold function. Thanks for the inspiration!

I can see a Han Solo spin of centred around the Kessel Run.
