fantasy novel I read and want to find again

About 7 years ago I read a novel about a man who was part of a disbanded military group. He was working penance if you will for a city lord or something like that, and was either directed to leave and lead a new group or ran away, I'm not sure. There was a couple battles where they fought something "unusual" I want to say one battle was either in or on the edge of a field of thorn trees or bushes...and the other was defending a small town with a bridge...the military group that he had been part of were legendary....sorry this isn't much to go on I know, any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if the black company is the correct one...I want to say that the main character was leader of this military group, ticked off a queen or something so she removed him from the group and sent them of to some long forgotten land...then he gets put in charge of a new group, in which a couple men remember his deeds with the old group...but I don't know, I guess I'll read the black company series...worst case I get to enjoy a good book
