Help finding short story?

I'd appreciate any help.
Looking for a short story about a father and son (mother is out of the picture) who are of a religion that doesn't believe in body modification or enhancement. Set in the future when that is common, and they are on a spaceship (or some such place) where the only work available to the boy is by accepting the body modifications in order to work on something in an extreme environment. He does . . . and the complications follow. Story also has some super all-answers computer/instructor, like the Internet with a personality.

Title & author would be greatly appreciated.

Your summary description almost exactly matches "The Homecoming" by Mike Resnick.

The only reason I say "almost" is that the mother is in the picture. . . except that she has memory loss, and so, in a way, she "isn't in the picture".

Thanks, but . . . not it. I'll still give that one a look, though. This one is too new, for one thing. I read the one I'm looking for in 2008, and it was old then. How old? I don't know. But I do appreciate the effort.
