I read this book in 2005. Can't remember the name or author, but the story is vivid. Synopsis: everyone wears a thin headpiece that connects them to a worldwide consciousness. When her's breaks, the story's protagonist is forced to briefly walk the streets unconnected. she notices that other connected people suddenly take notice of her (as opposed to the distracted stare common among people wearing headpieces).
The story reveals an internet-based consciousness that is born, and evolves, from the billions of minds connected to the internet. The story proceeds as the protagonist tries to uncover and expose this hidden entity.
Meanwhile, a group of scientists familiar with the entity attempt to recreate another internet-based consciousness artificially on the moon.
Great book following the path of Ghost in the Shell. Does anyone else recognize this Novel?
