Ser Robert Strong - potential for spoilers.

Finished ADWD last weekend and had resisted temptation to look at rumours of any kind about the entire series until I had done so and I had a few of my own - to be honest they were pretty much the same theories that most 'educated' people come up with: links between Syrio/FM, thoughts on Jon Snow's parents and I had one about Robert Strong, although I must admit, I simply thought it may be a relation to The Cleganes - is it pretty much a given on forums that he is the reanimated corpse of Gregor Clegane or are there other plausible rumours out there? I did a brief search of forums but all I could find was a rather 'silly' idea that is could be The Elder Stark.

Could anyone shed any light on other rumours?

We lovingly refer to him as 'Un-Gregor'.

The theory is that the enormous skull that was delivered to Dorne was the skull of that mis-shapen dwarf that someone brought to Cersei trying to collect the reward on Tyrion.

That is what I had assumed; was there not a passage where Qyburn intimates that the Clegane project has not gone well?

I can see why people like the theory about the dwarf skull, and maybe it's right, personally I find the idea of a dwarf having a skull big enough to pass for Gregor's a little implausible.

I think that the skull actually was Gregor's and Ser Robert Strong's helm is empty. Admittedly this is a little crazy too.

I don't think there's any good theories except that it is Gregor Clegane in some form.

I share the same thoughts about the FrankenGregor thing. His face was never shown and that he never speak. When I reread the AFFC, I always imagine the Headless Murderer in Legends of Sleepy Hollow to fit into this Ser Robert Strong.

There's a dream of Bran's (I think) where a giant of a man in armor lifts his visor and there's no face underneath -- just black blood. It could be metaphorical in that he has no face because he's "not human" or it could be more literal in that there's no face under that helm.

I don't know about anyone else, but "Ser Robert Strong" is a jump the shark moment for me.

It can only be Ser Gregor, yet everyone pretends it isn't.

Yet Ser Gregor is supposed to be dead, and if he isn't, it's not just the other characters being fooled, it's us as well.

To me it's kind of ridiculous because we have to believe that Gregor is Too Important To Kill and therefore defy the apparent laws of reality being provided.

I could see that but I also see it as a mechanism to display the extent of Cersei's deprivation and desperation. As batsh*t crazy as she's gone I really am starting to believe she was sired by Aerys. I think FrankenGregor's time will be short. He is not a person anymore, only a tool that Cersei will rely upon to save her royal hide...and I don't expect it to work. Besides, if anybody in this story (with the possible exception of Ramsay) deserves to be poisoned, left to die a long, slow, extremely painful death only to be reconstructed as some kind of monster made with spare parts and left in a semi-sentient state....it's Gregor Clegane.

Mayhaps Robert Strong does not last long, but I think the critical aspect is that Qyburn has pulled off some sort of necromancy. What is his next project? Can he put a new hand on Jaime? Can he do something with the dragon skulls? Can he create a look alike for Tommen? I really don't want to see Tommen die.

Or...where was the Young Wolf's head? We knew that Grey Wind's severed head was sewed by the Freys on his master's body...but what happened to the head?

That might be the most crack-potty one I've ever heard. So the King in the North will return as a giant zombie warrior-knight sworn to protect the Lannister King! Ha!

Giant Zombie Warrior Knight would be an excellent name for a band.

Actually, that sounds like the creature type of a card creation contest gone horribly wrong for Magic the Gathering.

Let's just face it: The only person big enough to fit the bill is Ser Gregor. Unless somebody got some Karstarks or Umbers to King's Landing.
I think that it WILL be Ser Gregor, but that this will be a gigantic twist that nobody can see coming. Remember how we all just assumed that Jon Connington was dead because he seemed so ...

Oh my god. I got the answer.

A baby giant.
