I read a short book in the mid 1970’s about a group of college students who went to an uninhabited planet as part of a survival course. Their means of getting there was through a portal used for travel throughout the universe. The visit was supposed to have been for only a few weeks but a star went nova between Earth and the planet they traveled to.
I cannot remember the title nor the author.
The book began with the story of the creation of the portal. The inventor was attempting to create a time travel machine, but when he went through, he ended up in what he thought was the past but turned out to be a preserve in Africa.
The students were stuck on the planet for, I think, several years, until they were able to be returned to Earth. To survive, they had to create their own small society, etc… which was the premise of the story.
