A crackpot theory, what if Euron is doing Gerion's bidding? The latter got tired of being in Tywin's shadow and went on his own quest decades ago. I'm sure news of Robert's death must have reached him if he made Valyria his seat of power, and hence he send Euron to scout the situation out and bring him the dragons if possible.

Gerion would remain in Valyria for the simple reason that his elder brother Tywin still intimidates him when it comes warfare, strategy and real-politics. Since one is not always up to date with current Westerosi events when living outside of the region. (Danaerys wasn't even aware of Robert's death for a long time), he might not even know that his older brothers are already dead.

The reason I postulate this, is because we know that GRRM has never said Gerion is dead, only that he is missing. We know Melissandre mentioned the importance of Lightbringer, and we know Gerion went after a ancestral sword called Brightroar first lost by Tommen II in Valyria. Since Westeros is a state consisting of seven kingdoms, one of which being Casterly Rock, we could consider Gerion a "Prince", and he would fill the "prince that was promised" prophecy quite nicely.

I'm not sure what his fortunes would be at the end of the series if he indeed was still alive, but this is one resurrection I would have no problems with.
