Hi,
I’m looking for couple short stories that I read a long time ago. Here is the basic outline of the stories:

Story 1: Humans were busy terraforming a new planet & in the process they faced some problems with the natives who were presumed to be not sentient & living in ruins. The authority sent someone to investigate the native’s problem. He was kidnapped or taken by the natives & to his surprise they were able to communicate with him. He promised their leader that the company will stay away from their areas & leave the ruins untouched. At the final twist, the leader tells him that the ruins actually belong to the humans!!

Story 2: A human spaceship crashed on an alien planet. The survivors discover that due to some strange phenomena, nothing electronic was working & even their cloths begin to decay. An argument erupted among the survivors because of the fact there were more men than women in the group!! They organize fighting matches over women
During one of these fights, an alien spaceship appeared and snatched the two men fighting & few others. In the alien ship, the humans are put in what appeared to be a zoo. They try to prove to the aliens that they are sentient beings. They failed in proving that, until one day, while in their cage, a small creature that look like a mouse is seen. They make a trap & captured it. A short while after that, one of them is taken to the aliens & then they were released. When the humans ask their colleague, what proved to the aliens that they are sentient, he tell them that the aliens believed that only sentient begins will try to imprison other begins

Hope someone will remember these stories :D

#2 sounds like "The Cage" by A. Bertram Chandler. I read it not long ago.

You can see a summary of it by someone else at:

that should help positively ID it if correct.

YES, that is the story that I was looking for. Wow I had no idea it was written way back in the 60s!

Thanks a lot for the link, now, I can go & look for the story collection in the bookstore :)

Both 'The Cage' and 'Protected Species' are part of 'A Science Fiction Omnibus' edited by Brian Aldiss.
