I'm looking for some more information on a short story I once read.

It was in a collection of short stories (mostly from the 1960's, I think), and it said it was part of a series about a group of scientists called 'The Incredible Engineers' (or possibly something similar to that). I can not remember the author or the title of the story. I have tried to google this, but found nothing.

The plot of this story was that a large, black, alien construction was found somewhere on earth and nobody managed to drill into it. That is when they called in the help of the Engineers who slowly managed to drill to the object's core, but when they got through they discovered the tunnel was twice as long as they had drilled, meaning that the object had somehow copied what they were doing.

I know it is not much to go on, but I hope it somehow rings a bell with someone. I'm mostly looking for info on the series, as the idea of 'incredible engineers' seems to have a lot of potential.

Many thanks in advance!
