Hello,
i am trying to locate a short story with the following plot elements. i apologize ahead of time if some or most of the things cited below are inaccurate. i also thank this forum for their help.
i read a sci-fi short story while in college about a device that is located on the moon (i believe).
the device is determined to be a destructive deivce and will likely destroy the earth unless the "key" or logic puzzle is solved - in which case the device will be rendered inert or harmless.
the plot unfolds whereby a search is conducted for qualified individuals that will be able to solve the puzzle and avert the crisis. the search locates such a man (known to the government who has been in seclusion for some time) who for the remainder of the story - solves the puzzle and save the world.
at the end of the story - the man (who is responsible for saving the world) is asked what his price is?
he replies - "don't tell my daughter(s) where you found me."
since i have daughters - we have joked and teased each other (many times) about this story.
thank you again
