I have just finished Game of Thrones book 1, and I am now reading as fast as I can through the second book... I even wrote a poem:

Ghost
A pup.
Snow white coat, blood red eyes.
He was left behind, exiled by his brothers and sisters.
I understand.
He is unwanted, unloved.
So am I.
I accept him, raise him as my own.
He is strong, silent, deadly.
He is a direwolf.
He is my brother.
He is Ghost.

Anybody like this? I have to say, I loved Ghost in the book. Did You? Who/ What was your favorite character?

As the first post refers to the books, I've moved this thread from the Game of Thrones sub-forum (in the Featured TV Series forum), to GRRM's author sub-forum.

Welcome to the fold, Direwolfking! I'm rather new to the series myself, I started reading after the TV series came out (but before I saw the TV series).

So....how blown away were you by Ned's death? What do you think are the implications? Who's your favorite character?

My favourite character the first time I read the book was Ned. I started to get annoyed with him towards the end, and then they cut off his head. I was pissed.

Ned always annoyed me personally. Arya was always my go-to character; Bran has potential; Robb is his father's son. :D

I sympathise with you Gumboot, Ned was also my son's favourite. I had watched season one and read the. book sometime before he watched the first season, so I knew what was coming. When he was at about episode 7-8 I asked him who his favourite character was and when he said Ned, I thought Man is he ever going to be unhappy. YES HE WAS. If he didn't hate Joffrey before then, he sure did afterwards.

Now we are at Season Three I think he has learnt not to get to attached to anyone, just in case.

Welcome Direwolf King

The first time I read the book was after the first season of the show but I always liked Ned. I was rooting for him in the show and even though i knew what would happen, I still rooted for him in the book. In the second read, I found a new appreciation for Tyrion (I had always liked him, but I liked him even more on the re-read)

My favorite the first time through was Arya. I liked Ned because I thought we were supposed to. :) When his head got lopped off, I was shocked and knew I wasn't reading the typical fantasy book. It really opened my eyes to what the series was going to be like.

My favorite character was either Jon (because there was always some mystery as to what might happen at the wall), or Daenerys (because something BIG almost always happened or was revealed).

I hope i spelled Dany's name right... I am SOOOO pissed that right at the end, the dragons hatched, and I am 165 pages into the second book and there STILL hasn't been a "Daenerys Chapter"...

And the day I posted that about the "Daenerys Chapter," i read the first "Daenerys Chapter." Coincidence?

Hang in there, Direwolfking, there is plenty of good Dany material waiting for you. If my avatar isn't obvious enough, I'm a pretty big fan of the dragons. :D

Please forgive the few responses you are receiving on this thread. I can't speak for everyone else but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is worried I may slip up and reveal something I don't intend to. After awhile all the stories blend together, so apart from Ned's and Robert's deaths, I can't be sure what all happens in the first book vs. the second book.

But, you know....read faster. :p

I second this. When I first read the books (a couple of years ago) it didn't occur to me to go onto forums and discuss them, I was just enjoying the ride. Then when ADWD came out and I had finished it I just HAD to start looking for more info, and with everything I've found since then, I'm very glad I remained free of spoilers that first time around.

Just lock yourself in a room with all four remaining books and don't come out until you're done :D

That's what I intend to do in summer. 1 week is going to be dedicated to reading Game of Thrones.

As one of many who are drown to the books after watching the TV series, I am reading book 1 right now and loving it. Martin is truly a master storyteller! His character building is amazing and I can't wait to read more to see them developing. The storyline flows well and the pace is just right. Even though I know what will happen the next I'm getting the background info and characters' details that were missing from the TV show.

The bonus is that because of the superb cast and acting in the TV series I found it quite handy to visualise the characters when reading the book. How else could I have imagined such a perfect Tyrion like Peter Dinklage's? So far the only characters I have to make up on my own are the queen and Catelyn. I don't think both actress fit their roles that well.

Fantastic books, I can remember reading these for the first time when they came out and then having to wait for the next one! When book 3 came out in two parts I re-read the first two books and couldn't believe how much story there was packed into them, even on a second time through.

They always seemed to be the books that were likely to be made into a film, or TV, series, especially as it was around the time the first Lord of the Rings film was being made.

I know exactly what you mean. I also find myself reading certain lines and imagining the actor's voice saying it. Season one in particular has alot of scenes that go pretty much line for line with the books.

however, Peter Dinklage doesn't look the way tyrion was supposed to look. He is not near ugly enough and his eyes are the same colour, so I don't picture peter dinklage but i think he got the mannerisms exactly right and they certainly could not have cast a better actor for the roll.

the Cersei in the show isn't beautiful enough. not to say Lena Headey isn't gorgeous, but I don't think she rocks the blonde all that well. She looks much better with brown hair.

In fact when I was reading the description of Tyrion's eye colour I was thinking why they didn't get him to wear a green contact lens. :)

I agree about Cersei and Catelyn. I don't think the casting is quite right. Although, I know Jennifer Ehle was supposed to be Catelyn, but I can't remember why she pulled out of the show.

I wasn't happy when I first saw Peter Dinklage on the screen as Tyrion, but then when he opened his mouth and started talking... well now he is Tyrion in my mind. When I read the descriptions of him in the book I cringe because I feel that GRRM has it wrong.

Casting just as I pictured from the books:
Ned, Robb, Bran, Arya, Jon, Lysa Tully (and the little guy hanging off her tit), Littlefinger, Daenerys (except for her eyebrows), the Old Bear, Walder Frey, the Greatjon, Sam the Slayer, Margaery, Robert

Casting that was better than what I pictured in the books (these people supplanted my previous image):
Tyrion, Tywin, Jorah, Jaime, Theon, Bronn, Pycelle, the Blackfish, Renly, Loras, Stannis

Casting that I still see as wrong:
Asha (Yara?), Ygritte, the Hound, Shae, Sansa, Jeyne Westerling (or whatever her name is in the show), Varys, Catelyn, Cersei

Agree with all of those except Margery. Not saying your wrong, just saying she isnt how I pictured her.

Agree with all of this. I still think they describe tyrions face too often for me to really think of him as peter dinklage but as I said before, nobody else would have done as good a job with that roll. Still think they could have put a green contact in for him though. His mismatched eyes are mentioned in almost every one of his chapters and few chapters when other people are interacting with him.
