7 Seasons (says producers)

This is interesting. There are supposed to be 7 books total when all is said and done, and now they are saying there will be 7 seasons. But we already know Book 3 is being split into 2 seasons, so they have to combine a couple books into one season to make up for that. AFFC and ADWD seems obvious for this since they were meant to be one book. That leaves one season each for TWOW and ADOS. I suppose they know what they are doing since they have talked to GRRM about how it all ends, but since those aren't written yet, I would think it would be hard to know. But it could mean those books get back to the pacing of the earlier books, which fit into one season each fairly well.

I think there could have been one really good book combining AFFC and ADWD, so I think one season there seems logical.

Agree on a lot of what you said, Lady. No reason why they can't combine AFFC and ADWD as that seems to contain material and areas/houses that haven't really been touched on in the series (Iron Isles, Dorne, etc). They could easily combine AFFC and ADWD. That gives Martin 2 years to complete book 6 and another year after that to finish book 7. Seems a super tight schedule.

Yes, a bit tight. I hope Martin finishes the series before the show starts filming the final season. But if he doesn't, I just won't watch it. I'll wait until the book comes out, read it, then watch the final season. :)

I imagine there will be some AFFC scenes in the next season. They already seem to have done a lot of SOS in this season. Could look something like this -

S1 - GOT
S2 - ACOC
S3 - SOS
S4 - SOS/start of AFFC
S5 - AFFC/ADWD
S6 - TWOW
S7 - ADOS

They could very easily combine AFFC and ADWD into one series, by cutting out many of the new locations/characters and having some plot development for the rest.

After that I would have said there was another 3 seasons needed to finish the story properly. But they might be able to do it in 2.

Bearing in mind as well they could finish ASOS half way through S4 and then bring forward AFFC/ADWD material.

In terms of the books I would be amazed if GRRM can finish it all off in two more books and even mores surprised if he gets there before the TV show does.

I'm sure I remembered reading somewhere that season 3 was renewed for 20 episodes over 2 years. If that's the case, then next year it will still only be season 3 -- just with a year long break between episodes.

But now that I look for it, I can't find where I read that...

But if what I remember is correct, that means a season for each book, making it 7 seasons.

Yes, book 3 is being split into two seasons but not completely or in half. They have now gone way past the half way makr in ASOS but there is much yet to cover so it will melt into AFFC and ADWD (who happen simultaneously until about 3/4 of the way through ADWD that then advances the storyline past where AFFC ends) and that will take 2 seasons.

The producers need to talk to each other. George RR Martin (who is one of the producers) seems to think there will be anything from 10 to 12 seasons...

Although this news of seven seasons heartens me as it means all the boring bits will be cut out of AFFC and ADWD.

GRRM is delusional if he thinks that any TV show of this nature would run to 10-12 seasons.

There is no need for it as well as the TV producers would need to be insane to introduce the multitude of new characters that he does from AFFC onwards. Non book readers are already complaining they can't keep up with all the characters.

They have got rid of one filming location (Robb & catelyn) so only add one more in future seasons.

I read somewhere that HBO are planing for 9 seasons
