Fantasy book mid 90's with a healing snake?

I can't remember much just that the hero had some type of religion that he had to drink lots and I think they called it religion of the dog and that some how they gave him a snake that lived in his stomach and healed him of all diseases. So after that he could not get drunk anymore the rest is blurry read it in '95.
 
Perhaps it was a Stargate novel? In the TV series SG1, the character Teal'c has a Larval Goa'uld inside his stomach. It is snake-like, and heals any injuries or illnesses. You should check out the different Stargate novels. There were some based off of the movie, but I believe most Stargate novels were based on the Tv series'.
 
Well, the healing snake is a part of several Native American folklores. I know that it is mentioned in CE Murphy's Walker Papers books but I doubt those are what the OP is looking for. Maybe looking for books tied to this type of folklore might help.
