William Marshal, also known as William the Marshal, and Sir William Marshal, the first Earl of Pembroke, was born to John Marshal and Sybilla of Salisbury in 1147 and died on May 14, 1219 at the age of 72. He was a famous English swordsman and statesman. Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said about him that he was “The greatest knight that ever lived.” He served four kings including: King Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, John, and Henry. He was honored with the title of first Earl of Pembroke. In England and throughout Europe, he was known simply as “The Marshal.”

great find Peeves! So far there's only 3 monarchs that BFS served in the asoiaf, Aerys II, Robert and Dany...who dyou think is the 4th?

There are four. King Jaeherys, Danny's grandpa, was also mentioned. It's "gods tossing coin every time a Targaryen is born, whether he'll be a madman or a great ruler" comment to Ser Barristan The Old that was mentioned. So, the list goes: Jaeherys, Aerys, Robert, Joffrey (briefly) and Dany.

Oh...my bad. So, will this mean that BFS may have a heroic death fighting for Dany's cause? My apologies for the comment. I'm not that familiar with world history (Mayhaps I skipped the class the day they discussed the Medieval Age in England). GRRM is not shy on killing characters off, so I might as well try on thinking that Ser Grampa will not be there on the 7th book. :(

Thanks Peeves, I did a little more reading on William Marshal and interestingly he married at 42 to a girl who was only 17. They had 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. All the boys died childless although the daughters had many children. William himself lived to a great age of 72, which back then was very long lived.

Getting back on track though please don't even think it Eversummer, love Ser Barristan he has to make it to the end.

I think BFS needs to see Dany restored to the throne before he dies. He needs that closure before he will allow himself to give up that ghost. I think he considers it one of the greatest mistakes he ever made to continue in Robert's service instead of remaining true to the Targaryens.

If GRRM really did use this guy as the template for BFS, then those children are deliciously ironic, considering how BFS takes his vow seriously.

While on the topic of Selmy, is the nickname BFS unique to this board or is it used elsewhere as well? When I first started lurking here I had some trouble figuring out what it meant. It's a good nickname though :)

I'm not sure who coined it first (Boaz can tell us), but BFS stands for Barristan Freaking Selmy. You may also see BMFS, Barristan MF'ng Selmy.

Essentially it's just a reflection of his status as the Chuck Norris of ASOIAF.

Yeah, I had figured that much out :) Was just curious as to whether it was a universal thing or just on this board. Is he the only one with a nickname here, or are there others I've missed? I was reading another forum and saw Jorah Mormont being referred to as Ser Friendzoned :D

LOL! I like that one!

The other nicknames include Un-Cat and FrankenGregor. There are more that I can't think of right at the moment. I haven't seen BFS used anywhere else, but then, I don't really hang around any other GRRM forums. :)

I started using the BMFS because a different site that I read every day (cracked.com) always refers to "Samuel L. Mother F'in Jackson", and it's what runs through my head every time I read about Barristan M F Selmy.

"Why did he do it? Because he's Barristan Mother F'in Selmy, that's why!"

I had the pleasure of talking to some "unsullied" friends the other day, i e people who are watching the show but haven't read the books. They were focusing on really weird things! Anyway, one of them really liked Selmy and thought he was pretty much the badass gramps who could own up anyone and anything. I suppose that goes to show they've managed pretty well with the casting there.

They thought that Margaery was a weird character and couldn't figure out "her agenda". They were waiting for someone to die because that hadn't happened in a while now, and one of them was certain Tyrion would end up killing Joffrey before the season was over. They have no clue about anything to do with the RW. When I mentioned Robb they went "who's Robb?" >.>

haha! "Unsullied" now that's a fun name lol! I have a lot of friends like them and I tried to tell them to start reading the books to no avail.

Selmy started serving under Jaehaerys II, but he first came to notice and attention during the reign of Aegon V. If you count that as 'serving', he's already served five (six, if you count the day or two before Joffrey dismissed him).

I've heard them mention this guy on the History Channel too. (back when it showed something other than Vegas Pawnbrokers) The problem is that he's a pretty good template for ANY medieval knight, maybe not as most them really were but as they came to be seen by the Romance poets, like Tennyson et al. Medievalism, after all, is actually an invention of the 19th century, like the whole idea of historical "eras"
