I've been trying to get my nephew to read more and I've been having some success with some of the sci-fi books I enjoyed at his age.

I've been trying to find the title of a book I read in high school (at least I think it was in high school) but I've tried searching every which way on Google and Amazon with no luck finding the title. (I actually used to have a copy but of course I can't find it anywhere)

The story was about a couple of teenagers that find a diamond statue while diving and exploring an underwater cave. I believe they show it to their teacher who in turn gets some other people involved. Doing some further exploration they find a non-human body in a diamond like coffin, the being turns out to be in suspended animation and when they wake him up he leads them to his former home an underground city from a time before humans evolved. (I don't remember the characters name but I believe the name of the city was Haad) I vaguely remember that some disaster befell his people and he had thought himself the last one. Upon exploring the city he somehow discovers that some of his people may have left the city and that he may not be the last of his kind. They then go on a search for the others of his kind.

Anyone know the title or author of this book?

Thanks,

- Norm

Stranger from the Depths? I read a book by that name that I got through Scholastic Books likely in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

I'm pretty sure I'm correct. The author's name is Gerry Turner. Found it on the Google machine.

That's the book, thanks! This must be out of print or something since both Amazon and BookFinder only have used copies and they start at something like $18 for "Good" copy.

How much!

I can't post a link but if you search for "porcupine books" and check out the "Paperback Room" you'll find it for just one UK pound (about 1.50).

I can't tell you how much S&H will be to the US and there is a five pound minimum order - but then I guess you may find some others in the long list - but it will still work out cheaper than $18.

I've ordered a bunch of books from him before and the condition ranges from what I would say is "read one or two times" to "very well read" but at that price who cares. You can always drop him an Email and enquire about condition.

For an old paperback it is rather steep even if it is out of print. It's a good book but I don't think it won any Hugo or Nebula awards and they're not first editions or anything. I'll check out the dealer you suggested and see if I can find enough to make an order worth while.

Thanks!
