Hi and thanks for looking at my first thread on this forum.
Looks like a great place for someone like me who loves to escape into other worlds courtesy of a great story.
I've been racking my brain trying to remember the name of a book that I read some years ago. I don't know the author either
It is a Fantasy, based in an earth-like world. Timeline is something like pioneering days.
Basic story line as I remember it is....
A young woman (possibly a servant or lowly born commoner) has her magical powers uncovered when her master tries to force himself on her.
In a burst of power she turns him into a grease spot on the wall (kills him!) and her uncovered power brings her to the attention of the authorities who send her for training.
With more training she joins the army and uses her abilities to defend her people against invaders.
Her fellow magic users have various powers, some are healers, others are fighters.
I seem to remember there being budding romantic undercurrents with a fellow trainee.
Would appreciate all help or suggestions as I remember liking the book and reckon it is probably the first in a series.
