80s(?) Book about Worlds created by Mind

Hi -

I'm looking for a book I read in the mid 80s. I can't remember anything about it, except it involved a world where everyone lived in small islands on fixed reality, surrounded by 'grey mist'. You could travel between these islands, but only in a group.

There may have been a trilogy of books. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

Could it be the Soul Rider series by Jack Chalker?

I was thinking Chalker, too, and was going to say Flux and Anchor; until I looked it up and discovered that was the Soul Rider series…
