1980s sci fi book about stranded people and fish that turn into monsters

Please help. What s the sci if book where explorers crash on a utopian like land only to discover that the food source turn into deadly monsters? I think the food source was salmon.

The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes. There is a sequel titled Beowulf's Children.
 
The sequel is also called Dragons of Heorot, but it was terrible compared to the original. From memory they called the fish like creatures samlon (as opposed to salmon) and the monsters were grendels. Legacy was a great read.
