The sad news surfaced that Iain lost his battle with cancer today. He was a great writer and his legagy lives on.

I hope his journey into the next life is a safe one.

God bless...

A shame. A genuinely nice bloke and a very good writer. He raised the game for sf in the UK and he'll be remembered for that as much as for his many excellent novels.

The first Iain Banks novel I read was Whit. After that there was no stopping me. The Business remains one of my favourite books.

He brightened my life and the lives of so many others with his work. A great writer and a great human being.

One of two writers whose books I have actually kept throughout my various moves and purges. It is a sad event indeed.

One of the most inventive and downright fun writers I've ever read. He expanded my brain. Thank you, Iain.

The first of his books that I read was Consider Phlebas, and that led to many more, both science fiction and other, and I loved them all, and although Consider Phlebas would never be my favourite Banks book, it probably contains one of the strongest moments in any that he has written, and one that has burned itself into my memory like acid.

And that is something rare and the mark of a great writer.

RIP

and thank you.

Lets hope he's actually just in storage and will reappear when we're in The Culture

RIP

Nothing is sadder than the loss of a brilliant Mind. He will be remembered, studied, read and loved for a very, very long time...

RIP Iain M Banks. And thank you.
