Weird science fiction novel...

I have this memory of a strange science fiction-y book that I read some time ago (going on ten years). The main character was a detective who was hired to find a missing scientist and he had to travel through different (read strange) areas of the city. (One area was populated solely by cats)

The introduction of the main character was him waking up in his flat and making an epic journey/crawl across his bedroom floor to try and make it to the ringing telephone.

Not much to go on but maybe someone out there can help connect me to this book.
