Unintended Consequences

I am looking for a book that I read, probably in 1988 or 1989. I don't know if the book was current then or if it had been published earlier.

Basic story line is, a group from earth established a colony on a distant planet. Surroundings are compatible and food sources are available. At some point in the story the people begin being attacked by a large number of creatures that comes from the river which can only be described as a cross between an alligator a wolverine, extremely vicious and hard to stop.

The unintended consequence; as the colonizers began to establish themselves they were harvesting a tuna like fish from the river for food. Typical of humans, they began to deplete the numbers of this tuna, upsetting the balance in the ecosystem. This particular fish was eating young version of the vicious creature that was now growing and coming out of river to attack the colonizers.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Legacy of Heorot by Niven, Pournelle, and Barnes. There was also a sequel but I don't think I read it.
