Some fledgling advice?

I came home from work yesterday. House windows were all open because of the heat. I could hear the birds giving it Laldy (as we say in Scotland) outside. Then, I realised there was something wrong. The sound was coming from inside the house. Eventually I traced it to the attic. As soon as I opened the hatch, a young bird (Sparrow I think) fell out. The wings appear almost fully formed but it doesn't quite seem ready to fly yet.

Not knowing quite what to do, I picked it up carefully, carried it outside and put it in the long grass at the edge of my garden (I always keep it long at the perimeter for wildlife). A few minutes later, more sounds from the attic and I found another fledgling. Put it next to the first in the grass and saw the parents apparently tending to them. I could not find any trace of a nest in the attic and (so far) no more fledglings. I think the nest may have been in a position where it was not in the attic but the birds have fallen from the nest and in. It's a very old house with the usual gaps etc in certain areas.

I'm not really expecting them to survive (too many cats around here) but, for future reference, I thought I'd better find out what to do. any advice would be appreciated.

Ideally, leave them in the attic, if there are gaps for the parents to get in. The problem with that is if the young get in, but there's not enough room for an adult. Then, it might be advisable to push the fledglings back towards a gap, where the parents can find them and coax them out. I don't think you're solution was a bad one, though. If the adult sparrows are tending to them, there's a chance they'll survive. Do you have a bird table you could put them on, to keep them out of reach of the cats?

Standard advice is to leave them alone as much as possible, but every situation is different, of course. Sorry to be a fence-sitter.

Thanks for the advice. Don't have a bird table and couldn't see where the birds had come from originally. I guess all I can do is keep my fingers crossed.
