the books main character is a female traveling with either a griffin or a dragon on a quest, gets caught in a landslide and is hidden by a retired female soldier whilst she recovers. you need a ring or something to be able to travel between different segments of the world freely (sure they are referred to as curtains in the book) and there is a group with different magical skills but that don't appear to get on that well that all live in one section.
