There is so much in this forums that I had a hard time trying to figure out if this had already been mentioned or not, but following the Red Wedding scene in Season 3 where Talisa is killed making us all think Jeyne Westerling must surely be dead in the books -- or am I just getting my thoughts crossed? Was she presumed dead? Maybe I have to go back and read the books again. I feel like I'm forgetting something...

Anyway... I stumbled upon this comment on GRRM's not a blog:

Robb's wife is alive in the novels too, but Jeyne Westerling is an entirely
different person than Talisa Maegyr with an entirely different fate.

Not A Blog - In Memoriam

So there you have it, I believe we have been discussing theories about her and what not. GRRM just confirmed it. But what does that mean for the books compared to the TV show... It's moments like this where they really do seem like they could go their own ways, or Jeyne could just be relegated to a mention in passing and fade into the background.

I suppose one thing we may be able to infer is that, in the books, Jayne Westerling's future isn't an essential part of the movement towards the end game; otherwise the show wouldn't have written her out of the story, one way (by not having her meet Robb) or another (by killing her substitute).

So in the end she was likely just a plot device to get Robb killed?

btw, I'm totally at a loss as to why I thought she was dead in the books...

Well, we don't know whose plot device she was (or whose they were).

I'm guessing Tywin. (And, it seems, his plan... er... panned out.)

It might just mean that Jayne is doing to die, but in a more round-about way that would have been harder to depict in the show, so they just offed her at TRW.
