Somewhere around my college days in 1990, I read a story that might've been in a book similar to the Year's Best Sci-Fi Anthology series. It was about a malevolent creature that was holding someone captive and this creature belonged to a species of humanoids that reproduced by splitting in half after they had engorged themselves on food. The two halves of these creatures would be carted off where they would soon grow their missing half back. I think this maniacal creature had a defect where he could actually not split and after throwing itself a feast, it started going into convulsions because the reproduction process got triggered, but died in agony due to being unable to split. If anyone could tell me the name of this story and what book it appears in I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
