Sound effects for fiction?

I was stuck for inspiration to describe the ambient sound for a semi-desert scene, when I discovered a website that has a library of sound effects, that can be previewed by a mouse-over. So now I have my desert sound (I just have to describe it).
At Download Sound Effects Library – Download Sound FX Library – 1SoundFX.com there is a vast choice of other sounds.

My super hero WIP only needs kapow, thwock, kablam and karunch for sound effects, but I'm sure I can use this for other stories

when i can't think how a desert sounds, i turn on a clint eastwood movie,
however your solution is far more elegant, cosmic geoff.

(doesn't allow me to skive off and watch a movie 'for inspiration' though guess i will have to keep slogging now)
