All I remember is a scene from the novel. During a battle in space, an older character (general/president/admiral) I forget has to abandon ship...his escape shuttle/pod is also destroyed and he's adrift in his suit. Meanwhile a fighter pilot who was also trying to save the shuttle (but didn't know who was on it) also has his fighter/ship destroyed?
In any case the older man's suit(beacon?) is damaged and only because the pilot found and stuck around him does the guy survive. The fighter pilot didn't know who he saved as the suit's nametag was melted/smudged.
For the life of me I cannot remember what this is from. I was reading a variety of military/space opera sci-fi at the time (Honor Harrington, Lost Fleet, Miles Vorkosigan, Starfire/Stars at War, Tanya Huff) so it may be from one of those but I don't think so.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks!
