I am trying to find the title and author of a sci-fi novel I read a few years ago. The book is divided into different times, from the time of the first alien/human encounter, up to a future some several 100 years ahead.
The basic plot is that an alien race comes to Earth in search of suitable races to help fight a war with a distant civilisation that is threatening the peaceful civilisation they are part of. The aliens that come to Earth are one of only 2 races capable of actual warfare, all others having advanced beyond such terrible things, and humans are the only other they have encountered that actually thrive on it. They recruit humans to fight for them, and we because we have this flair for warfare we save them. The story follows man as he moves out into the Galaxy, and how we become the army for all the other races under threat.
