Does this book ring a bell for anyone? A book that was read in the 1960's (possibly written then) with this description:
First the action took place in England about the time of the great plagues, sometime after the 1300's or later. The main male character in somehow transported into the body of a well-to-do estate owner who is disliked by his wife and servants. However the main character is a warm friendly personality now in the owners body and becomes liked by all including the wife. He soon has a bathtub and boiler built and other household inventions. I believe I remember (but am not sure) that there is some ongoing struggle with the personality of the body's original owner.
I can't figure out the title and I'm hoping someone might know. Thanks!
