Read it in 1986 or so. First book of what looked to be a series.
Plot starts off with a wizard in a tower who is worried about things he is hearing/seeing. So he tries to summon a demon to answer his questions. In doing so, he is trapped be the demon and then forced to fight all the demons of hell until he is overcome. Having overcome the world's greatest magic user, the demons of hell spring out and start a war to destroy the world.
Against this demon army are humans and the army of the elves. One elf in particular stands out, as nature has taken one elf and made him the world's strongest warrior. In the process, because he feels the pain of the earth from the demons' touch, this warrior is half mad with battle lust.
The armies gather and a great battle is fought. Shortly thereafter the book ends, leaving the plot for the next book in the series.
I've been waiting almost 20 years to finish this story. Amy help would be much appreciated.
