NCsoft has announced a partnership with Innova (who run the Lineage II servers in Russia) to bring the game to European servers.
The European version will launch along with the Goddess of Destruction expansion, and the game will be free-to-play, a model an increasing amount of MMOGs are adopting.
This year, Conan, Star Trek Online, City of Heroes and DC Universe Online have all announced or already switched over to free-to-play models which charge no monthly fee to play.
Instead they make their income from micro-transactions and payments for premium content or features.
European players who already have accounts on the NCsoft West servers can continue to play there if they want to keep those characters. A new “hybrid business model” is being introduced on those servers, with details yet to be revealed, but presumably it’ll be free in some capacity (perhaps with a level cap).
The upcoming Goddess of Destruction expansion sounds like a pretty tasty morsel for free players to get their teeth into, too.
It introduces eight new hero classes, such as the Eolh Healer who can grant the party invulnerability and cast extremely swift heals while life-tapping enemies. Dozens of new weapons and armour sets are promised, and of course there are new monsters and bosses, along with fresh and revamped zones.
There have been tweaks made to the core gameplay as well, such as improved skill animations. New combat skills will also be on offer.
All this should arrive in the next month or so.
