Remember Mortal Kombat: Annihilation? If you watched it, you’re probably still trying to forget the 1997 movie, which was a loose adaptation of the Mortal Kombat 3 video game.

It was actually the sequel to the first Mortal Kombat film two years previous, but Annihilation was truly panned by the critics – a thinly strung together set of fight sequences with one of the most incoherent and pointless plots ever scripted.

Perhaps the most amusing criticism was that it made the initial Mortal Kombat flick look Oscar-worthy, and unsurprisingly Annihilation appeared to complete destroy any chances of another MK film.

Though it seems that enough time has now passed to give the franchise another punt when it comes to the silver screen.

Numerous reports have sprung up around the net that Warner Bros is planning to unleash a third Mortal Kombat movie for 2013, and that Kevin Tancharoen is attached to direct. Who?

Mr Tancharoen directed Glee: The 3D Concert Movie – but we’ll forgive him that, as he also directed and produced the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. That was after he’d produced a short concept film for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth which went viral on YouTube.

And was much liked by many – you can check it out here. Indeed, as the mood of the short suggests, Tancharoen intends to make his Mortal Kombat film gritty and brutal, a proper 18 certificate film and not the PG type nonsense the nineties flicks were hampered by.

All in all, we’re really looking forward to seeing what he can make of this. Expect the film to be launched alongside the next Mortal Kombat game which will probably be due in 2013 (unless they pump one out in 2012, as well – a possibility given the success of the last video game outing).
