Good news for fans of the more modern flavours of Star Trek, the (not quite so modern) Next Generation variety in particular.

Because Star Trek: The Next Generation is all set to warp onto Blu-ray, and not just in its original format, naturally.

As with the original Star Trek remastering for High Definition, smart new effects will be introduced, a process which was considerably more time consuming for The Next Generation due to the method of having to implement those effects from the original film negatives (effectively having to re-edit the whole thing from scratch).

That’s why it has taken a while to get the project going, but fear not because the Blu-ray boxed sets of Star Trek: TNG will appear later on next year.

The first season will be released first, obviously, and will swiftly be followed by more. If you can’t wait for the best part of a year, the good news is that early in 2012 a sampler release is planned.

This will consist of three episodes, the original pilot along with Sins of the Father and The Inner Light.

The Blu-ray boxed sets are of course coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, with the show first broadcast in September 1987.

There are 178 episodes in total, which were screened on the original run through to May 1994. All of which makes us feel a little old.
