NCsoft and Paragon have announced that their super-hero MMOG, City of Heroes, has joined the ranks of those massively multiplayer games which boast a free-to-play model.

The so-called Freedom model grants access to level 50 with nothing necessary in terms of subscription.

Players will, of course, have the opportunity to purchase new content as and when they please, the first batch of fresh content being rolled out in the form of Issue 21: Convergence.

Convergence is quite a package which firstly changes the start of the game to give players access to all archetypes with no alignment restriction – you’ll be able to choose good or evil in this initial start-up experience.

A new zone is provided, First Ward, apparently the “training and testing grounds for some of Praetoria’s most elite forces and sinister weapons”. It also hosts a zone-wide event, the Seed of Hamidon.

A fresh epic challenge is provided, The Underground Incarnate Trial, which culminates in a huge battle against the Avatar of Hamidon for up to 28 players.

Additional mission are provided, too, with monthly signature story arcs starting up, offering key roles in the main storyline (these are free to VIP players).

A Paragon Rewards program has also been implemented to hand out some unique in-game goodies, and new power sets and costumes are a given. One of the powers being the rather groovy sound time manipulation (again free for those VIPs).

Brian Clayton, Executive Producer at Paragon Studios, commented: “We aren’t just flipping a switch and going ‘Free-to-Play.’ We’re embarking on the biggest content and feature update to City of Heroes in its seven-year history.”
