Remember Enslaved, the action-adventure which came out last autumn?
It was a very smart post-apocalyptic re-imagining of the traditional tale of Monkey, the cheeky chappy with a staff, headband and his own fluffy portable cloud to zoom around on.
Released to considerable critical acclaim – we played it and thoroughly enjoyed it, too – you’d imagine Enslaved 2 would be marked up on developer Ninja Theory’s to-do list.
However, it appears that this isn’t the case. According to a report on CVG, co-founder Tameem Antoniades told Edge that: “Enslaved should have done better. Right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time.”
“[But] because that didn’t happen we’ve not expanded to two teams like we intended to. So we’ve remained a smaller shop.”
Why didn’t it happen? Despite some very positive press and reactions in general, Enslaved simply didn’t sell very many copies.
It came up considerably short of the million units publisher Namco Bandai was expecting of it. Quite possibly due to its first week of October release date last year, which put it up against a considerable weight of AAA titles.
Unfortunately, with Enslaved not getting a sequel now, it isn’t likely to ever have one. Obviously that’s not a definitive statement, there is still some hope.
But currently, Ninja Theory is having to focus solely on DmC Devil May Cry.
