Robot Entertainment has announced a release date for its Orcs Must Die game.

And you can expect the green-skinned unfortunates to start dropping likes flies come October 5th on Xbox Live Arcade, and a week later on the PC via Steam (and other digital distribution mediums).

Orcs Must Die is an action-strategy title with strong hints of tower defence, as you must keep a number of fortresses defended from an advancing horde of orcs (along with a collection of eleven other “villainous” monsters).

Patrick Hudson, CEO of Robot Entertainment, commented: “The slaying hour is nigh upon us. We can no longer restrain the enemy at the gate. We will soon turn the rift defence over to Xbox and PC gamers to beat back the mob and save the Order!”

The idea is to use six weapons and spells, plus 17 different traps, to “hack, launch, flatten, gibletize and incinerate your enemies”. Combinations of traps can be concocted to achieve some of the most grisly (and comical) deaths possible.

As you work your way through the game’s 24 levels, you can upgrade your weapons and traps to fit your style of play. And once you’re done, the nightmare difficulty level becomes unlocked for a really brutish challenge.

It looks like a pretty smart indie title, and hopefully a nicely priced one too – it should weigh in at the £10 mark, although that’s still to be confirmed.

Find out more about the game at the official website, which features trailers aplenty.
