Good news for those of you who have signed up to beta test Diablo III.
Blizzard has begun the process of sending out invites to test the game in closed beta, so some lucky folks will be getting a notification in their email inbox.
The company is after a range of different PC specifications to run the game with, and to sign up to have a chance of testing, you need to be a Battle.net member and run the Diablo III system check (which sends over your machine details).
Opting in to the beta program isn’t the only way to get an invite to the beta of the much anticipated action RPG, however. There will also be competitions forthcoming in the future that’ll give away beta spots.
Hunting around on YouTube, we found this video clip of someone who has made the beta. It shows the opening character creation and the first quest, with the game looking like it’s in pretty good order, as you would hope.
All the traditional Diablo trappings are here, such as the health and mana orbs, loot aplenty scattered on the ground, and manic clicking on monsters to take them down. It looks, at core, to be the same classic action RPG.
The beta contains the entirety of the first act of the game, apparently, so a fair whack of adventuring.
How long the beta period will last – and indeed when the game will be released – are currently unknowns. Blizzard has made a couple of things clear about the beta’s content, though – player versus player won’t be tested, although the auction house will be at some later stage in the process.
The auction house is one of the most controversial aspects of the game, because not only will it allow players to sell items for gold, but also for real world cash. Thereby legitimising item/gold farming, or taking the sting out of the inevitable black market in such activity, depending on your viewpoint.
Diablo III’s target release date was supposed to be the end of this year, but it’s unclear whether it will slide to 2012.
