If you’re heading down to the Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court, which starts on Thursday and runs through the weekend, then you can have a crack at setting a Guinness World Record (for the Gamer’s Edition of the famous book, that is).
And it’s an unusual record too, with the charity SpecialEffect having a booth which showcases an eye controller for racing games.
Yes, you read that correctly – punters can attempt to do a fastest lap using just an eye movement sensing controller to guide their car.
The sensor detects whether you’re looking up or down to accelerate or brake, and left or right to steer. Apparently it takes a bit of getting used to – fairly obviously – but once you get the hang of it, the system works pretty well.
It’s designed to give those who have suffered severe illnesses or injuries a chance to be able to play games, say for example somebody who is paralysed and can’t use a normal controller.
Matt Hampson, who was an England Under 21 rugby player before he suffered a severe spinal injury and was paralysed from the neck down, is a patron of the charity and an ambassador for the technology.
He said: “We want to use technology and game therapy to improve people’s quality of life, and SpecialEffect opens games to a wide audience of people who previously would not be able to take part.”
“Games as therapy and entertainment are a force for good, we also extend our thanks to Guinness World Records for helping us to arrange the record attempts and the Eurogamer Expo – and hope that visitors to the Expo will join us in setting these all new Guinness World Records.”
The person who manages the fastest lap over the course of the Expo will be crowned the new Guinness World Record holder, and will hopefully pop up in the next Gamer’s Edition of the record book.
If you’re heading to the Eurogamer Expo, be sure to check out the SpecialEffect stand where you can register and have a crack at a record attempt.
